Stoneham Family Day a Success!
Liberty Bay was spotted in Stoneham, MA celebrating the history of 'base ball' with local residents! VINTAGE BASE BALL & FAMILY DAY, hosted by Liberty Bay Credit Union, was held at Recreation Field on July 16 and offered and abundance of FREE family-friendly activities including two vintage baseball games, face painting, a photo booth, caricaturist, minigolf, water balloon relays, and plenty of refreshing, free treats!
We were excited to see Stoneham Selectmen Chair Ann Marie O'Neill and Vice-Chair Caroline Colarusso engaging with local families and players alike, and were especially appreciative of the support from the local Police and Fire departments who helped keep the day safe and fun for all. A few familiar faces took the field in the second game including Steve Angelo, Stoneham's Director of Recreation and Frank Thompson, Stoneham Recreation Leader; Anthony Guardia, Director of Development and Danny Lumb, Stoneham Program Director at the Boys & Girls Club; Angelo Colucci, head of Stoneham Sabres; and Garin Veris, former Patriots player and Stoneham resident.
The history of 'base ball' in Stoneham
The Stoneham Kearsarges were a well-known base ball team back in the 1860's. Commissioned by Liberty Bay, The Essex Base Ball League, a nonprofit organization that researches and reenacts historically accurate base ball, unearthed the Kearsarges in their research of the history of base ball in Stoneham, and took the field on Saturday under their identity. They took on the Lowell Clippers, a likely opponent from that time, and went on to win one and lose one in front of a cheering crowd at Recreation Park. It was a hot day, but a great one.
Thanks to the Stoneham community for welcoming us and helping to celebrate America's favorite pastime.
